A4, 30 × 40 or 50 × 70: Which map poster size fits?

Measure the available width and height where the poster will hang. Take furniture, nearby pictures and usable wall space into account. A broad empty wall and a narrow nook call for different choices. If the map will join an existing group of pictures, measure the group's outer edges and the gaps between them too.

Think about where you will usually see the map from: a desk nearby, the sofa across the room or a doorway you walk through. A small print can work well up close yet barely register as a separate focal point from farther away. There is no single size rule that fits every home.

A4 measures 21 × 29.7 cm. It can suit a space beside a desk, a narrow nook or a place among other pictures. Choose it when the map is something to discover at closer range. With a broad city view, check whether the street pattern still shows the memory you want the small print to carry. A short title keeps the design calm.

A 30 × 40 cm print gives the map more space than A4 without needing a very large area of wall. It can stand alone above a small piece of furniture or become a larger element in a gallery wall. If you are choosing between a quiet reminder and a more visible poster, compare this size with A4 in the actual spot. The surroundings will tell you whether it has enough presence.

A 50 × 70 cm print needs considerably more clear wall space. It can work above a wider sideboard or as a single picture on an otherwise quiet wall. A larger print gives the same map more presence, but it does not fix an unsuitable crop. If the place that matters sits too close to an edge or a long line of text feels crowded, adjust the design rather than simply choosing the largest size.

Arrange sheets of paper into a rectangle of the right dimensions, or draw the outline on a larger sheet. Ask someone to hold it against the wall. Try the smaller of your two preferred sizes, then the larger, in the same position. Comparing an actual area is easier than imagining it from a ruler alone.

Return to your usual viewing spot. Does the rectangle get lost among the furniture, crowd nearby pictures or leave enough space around it? For a gallery wall, judge the whole arrangement. If you are adding your own frame, allow for its actual outer dimensions; the poster size is only the inner format. This test helps you judge scale. Choose your print size under ‘3. Size’ in the editor. A4, 30 × 40 and 50 × 70 have different aspect ratios, so the proportions and visible map edges can change. Check that the important place, a river or a distinctive road still fits comfortably in the view. Read the title and second line on the complete poster, especially when using a long place name.
